Sestriere (at an altitude of 2035 meters or 6676 feet) is the most important tourist
center of the Piedmont Alps. A long ski season is assured here between Christmas and
Easter, helped by artificial snowmaking equipment if necessary. In fact, this is the
capital of a vast ski domain known as the Milky Way, where there are ski trails stretching
into France. Sestriere, which is on the World Cup ski circuit, offers cross-country
skiing in winter. During July and August, there is an 18-holes golf course and tennis.
